Autism was considered a very rare case for many years. Studies showed that the affected ratio was just five children in every 10,000 new births. But, alarmingly the number of autism affected children has gone up tremendously. Studies showed that it had almost multiplied by 12 times, as every 60 children in 10,000 were reported to be suffering fro autism. Most recent studies show that one to two cases reported per 1000. The ratio is thrice higher for children affected from ASD standing at about 4.3:1 for male is to female ratio. Thus males outnumber females four is to one. This gender biasing is nothing different as males are much more prone to developmental diseases than females.
Autism affects many parts of the brain. Unfortunately, today the reasons for the occurrence of autism are still poorly understood. Parents usually detect autism in the first year or two. Heredity causes are considered to be 90% responsible for this disorder. Autism genetics are very complex. As of today, it is still unclear which genes are responsible for autism. Interestingly, some autism affected children achieve certain development much earlier than normal kids do. For example, they start identifying objects or even walking much earlier than normal kids. At the same time certain autistic kids are very late in achieving this development. About 50% of autistic children develop very normally. It is at the age of about 1.5 years to 2 years that the autistic symptoms begin to surface. The term coined for such disorder children is 'regressive' autism. There are certain guesses or beliefs that vaccinations or viral infections may be a cause of such regressions. After autism sets in, affected children lag behind in the fields of communication as compared to normal children. As also they fall behind in social skills and recognition.
To conclude, autism is still a very complex disorder and little is known. Also, the needs of the affected children differ vastly. However, after 50 years of extensive research today, with the help of traditional and modern techniques we are able to counter this deadly disorder. Until now it was a common thought that autism was accepted as ‘fate’. However the great news is that now-a-days a variety of treatment solutions are now available. With proper parental intervention at the right time and complimentary treatment we can overcome this disorder.
