Earlier people believed that any color can be formulated out of the three basic colors red, yellow and blue. These were hence known as he primary or primitive colors. Scientists hence considered these red, yellow, blue as the basis of all colors. The color theory of vision and such-like were hence founded on this primary RYB colors concept. A lot of color theories were formulated by scientists in the 18th century. In the later part of the century theories were mainly based on the psychological effect if colors. All these ideas, concepts, facts and theories were summarized by the German minister Johann Wolfgang von Goethe titled the ‘Theory of Colors’. Another summary was written by the noted French industrial chemist Michel-Eugene Chevreul called ‘The Law of Simultaneous Color Contrast. These books were instrumental in properly summarizing all the afcts and theories till then and also their own findings. However, most of the 19th century the color theory was not properly understood because of lack of scientific findings.
When mixing colors usually Newton’s color wheel is very effective. It describes complimentary colors. Complimentary colors are those which cancel the hues of other colors.
Howevere, a question arises in our minds, why study color theory? The answer is simple. Suppose you are a web designer. You just made your homepage. How many times did you wonder what color to give for the home page and which one for the buttons, the text, the marquee? Studies have shown that colors have a direct psychological impact. Infact colors have also been classified as positive and negative colors. Colors are treated as symbols. We immediately associate colors with emotions. For example, the phrase ‘green with envy’. Red is associated with danger and warning signs. So the colors you chose just now for your website are going to have a direct impact on your audience. It will decide how people will perceive your product or company. If you make the colors attractive and catchy your product will have a deeper impact on the clients and make your product seem more favorable.
Recently with ‘social image’ becoming very crucial and with the formulation of millions of more color combinations, color theory has gained an even wider importance. Choosing the right color scheme has gone beyond just what feels right to you. It has become a science. It is about what response your colors get. What impact they make. It’s a study about the current color trends, styles and fads.
Lastly, the present age demands that the color theory must take in scope the huge range of colors born because of the digital media which hugely magnify the range of imaging systems and content where colors are required.
